    According to the Shrimad Devi Bhagvatam, Goddess Lakshmi was cursed to become a Tulsi plant. To reverse the curse, Vishnu granted Lakshmi the boon of being born as a girl on Earth.
    Tulsi as the wife of Jalandhara
    Tulsi was also the wife of the demon king Jalandhara. Jalandhara was invincible because of a boon from Lord Shiva, as long as Tulsi remained chaste. Vishnu disguised himself as Jalandhara and broke Tulsi’s chastity, defeating Jalandhara. Tulsi cursed Vishnu to turn to stone, but Vishnu accepted the curse and became the Saligrama stone.
